Three high profile diplomats weigh in. Join the Consuls General of Germany, Israel, and the United States, in Toronto for a critical discussion and question session aiming to answer these questions.

Panellists:

Consul General Juan Alsace, USA: Mr. Alsace is a career Senior Foreign Service Officer with twenty-six years of service. Prior to assuming his current position in August 2012, Mr. Alsace served as Chief of the War Crimes, Democracy and Human Rights Division, in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research. His return to Washington service followed several years of overseas postings, including in Iraq as Team Leader of an embedded Provincial Reconstruction Team (2009-2010), Economic and Political Counselor in Santiago, Chile (2006-2009), and Consul General in Barcelona, Spain (2003-
2006).

Consul General DJ Schneeweiss, Israel: Mr. Schneeweiss joined Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1994, serving as Policy Assistant to Foreign Ministers Ehud Barak (1995-1996) and David Levy (1996-1998). Mr. Schneeweiss' first overseas posting was as Press Secretary at Israel’s London Embassy from 1998-2002, during which time he was recognized by Diplomat magazine as the most effective Embassy spokesman in London. From 2003-2006, he served as Policy Advisor to Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom and from 2006-2009 as Israel’s Deputy Ambassador to China. From 2009 until taking up his duties in Canada in August 2012, Mr. Schneeweiss was Director of Civil Society Affairs in Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Consul General Walter Stechel, Germany: After entering the Foreign Service in 1980, Mr. Stechel served at the German Embassy in Chile, at the Consulate in San Francisco (Vice Consul for Press and Culture), the Federal Foreign Office in Bonn (Deputy Head of Division for Scientific and Technological Cooperation), at the Embassy in Argentina (Secretary for Development Cooperation), at the Embassy in Canada (Head of Economic Affairs) and again at the Foreign Office. From 1994- 1998, Mr. Stechel served as Deputy Head of "Economic relations with Russia and the Newly Independent States." From 2003 to August 2006, Mr Stechel was Head of Unit 401 ("Principles and Coordination of development policy") of the Foreign Ministry, and in August 2006 he became Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mumbai, India. Since September 2013, Mr. Stechel has served as Consul General at the German Consulate in Toronto.
